Mutual Methods is the first post in sequence about participative approaches. This post sets the scene so you can find out about participative methods.
Approaches to working with people in meetings.
All these approaches can work with groups of any size, although larger groups need more planning. Further details can be found in my Community Development sequence.
- Participatory Appraisal combines research and community development. The approach can be used on the streets, in pubs and classrooms as well as in formal meetings. This is a later post about the use of participatory appraisal in community development contexts.
- Open Space Technology focuses on enabling a group to develop and set its own agenda. This is a later post about the use of open space technology in community development contexts.
- World Café is similar to Open Space Technology but a lighter touch and possibly a little more directive. This is a later post about the use of world café in community development contexts.
Other Approaches outside the context of the meetings
- Community Development is a massive topic and this post is about how to find out more. This is a later post about the use of participatory methods in community development contexts.
- Citizens’ Organising is an approach to development work that has proved effective in the United States but less so in the UK. This is a later post about the use of citizens’ organising in UK community development contexts.
- Non-directive consultancy is an approach to supporting development work usually on a one to one basis. This is a later post about the use of non-directive consultancy in community development contexts.
There are many similar approaches and I can research and add notes about others at your suggestion. If you have ideas, comment on one of the posts. I am always happy to answer questions about any of the methods listed.
